REGISTRATION FOR THIS FISHOUT WILL OPEN AT 12 NOON ON TUESDAY, DECEMBER 6th 2022
This Learn To Fly Fish Lower Yuba River Fishout on Saturday and Sunday, February 4th and 5th 2023 is offered initially to REGISTERED 2023 Level 2 and Level 3 LTFF students only.
The Lower Yuba flows out of Englebright Reservoir in the Sierra foothills near the gold mining town of Grass Valley. This is one of the closest wild trout fishing venues to the Bay Area; a roughly 3 hour drive from San Francisco. These waters are known for athletic, hard fighting wild rainbow trout and steelhead. The University of California-Davis-owns and manages private access to the river located above the Parks Bar Bridge/Highway 20 near Smartsville, California. We will have excellent walk and wade access to the river—hopefully at the beginning of the fabled skawla stonefly hatch on this river.
The typical rainbow trout in this section of the river is around 12-18”…smaller than what you may encounter say on the Lower Sac, but you won’t forget the fight! These fish jump and run---you will be in a fight all the way to the net.
Ten lucky 2023 LTFF students will be accompanied by GGACC mentors to enjoy this fantastic location. UC Davis now allows primitive camping at the property (vault toilets, bring your own water), so we will plan to camp as a group for the weekend. We will use dry fly setups for the skwala hatch, along with nymph rigs giving you lots of opportunity to develop your fly angling skills.
Cost: Registration is $170 per person which includes access to the property for the weekend (Friday evening to Sunday evening) and an assortment of flies selected for the Lower Yuba at this time of year. Plan to bring your own fishing and camping gear, along with food and water for your stay
Required Gear: 9 ½ ft, 5 weight floating line setup, along with 9 foot leaders and tippet (4x/5x), indicators, etc are perfect for this water. Bring your waders and wading staff, along with a fly box to carry the assortment of flies you will receive at the river.
Be sure to have both your 2023 California fishing license and the required steelhead card to fish.
Lodging: We will plan to have a group camp on the property, and enjoy the fun of bring-you-own food for group meals. You may also choose to stay off-property in either Yuba-City/Marysville, or Grass Valley/Nevada City. Our location is mid-way between; a 30 minute drive in either direction on highway 20.
Meeting Time and Place: The UC Davis property will become available to us at 4pm on Friday afternoon, February 4th. Start times on Saturday and Sunday mornings will be announced in our pre-fishout zoom meeting.
Cancellation Policy: There are no refunds. In the event that a student is, for any reason, unable to attend, he/she may resell his slot (rod) to another LTFF member (by first pulling from the waitlist if one exists). It is the sole responsibility of the student to manage this transaction.
