Free Casting Lessons at the Golden Gate Casting Ponds (11 Apr 2026)

The Golden Gate Angling & Casting Club's (GGACC's) Monthly Free Fly Casting Lessons are open to both Club members and the General Public. These free fly casting lessons are generally held on the 2nd Saturday of each month year-round from 9:30 AM - 12 Noon at the Golden Gate casting ponds. Free loaner equipment is also available on a first come, first served basis, but please try to arrive by 8:45 AM to take advantage of this limited free equipment.

A few points to consider –

These lessons focus on casting single-handed fly rods.
Casting lessons are a “go," rain or shine.
For safety reasons, no flies with hooks are permitted; only "yarn" practice flies are allowed (these practice flies are provided free of charge).
Students are expected to provide and wear their own eye protection (regular glasses, sun glasses, or safety glasses) at all times during the casting lessons.

Classes target four different skill levels (the classes are held concurrently):

Beginner
Novice
Intermediate
Advanced

On 5/3 and 6/7, we'll be holding clinics for Water Safety and Knot Tying and attendance is mandatory for Level 1's, in waders if possible.

We’ll have two in-person sessions: Water Safety and Knot Tying for Level 1's. These can’t be done effectively online. We know scheduling can be tricky, so we’re offering them twice: Sunday, May 3 and Sunday, June 7. Both topics will be covered each day:

First Session: 9:00–10:30
(Half the group: Water Safety / Other half: Knot Tying)

Break / Switch: 10:30–11:00

Second Session: 11:00–12:30
(Half the group: Water Safety / Other half: Knot Tying)

Please note that part of the Water Safety session involves getting into the water at the ponds. If you have waders, please bring them. You’re also welcome to wet wade (shorts and shoes). We have a limited number of waders available to loan—just check in with Alan/Thomas if you need a pair.

Casting Lab is open to all GGACC club members and provides an opportunity for coaching on your casting skills. Primary focus is developing the required casting skills for those seeking to apply to the Learn to Fly Fish program, where we now require demonstration of casting skills at the FCSD Bronze level. More information on LTFF here. Students who participate in the casting lab regularly through the several months it is available will have no trouble meeting this requirement. Secondary focus is coaching to achieve Fly Casting Skills Development at the silver, and gold levels. The FFI Fly Casting Skills Development, FCSD, program is designed to teach casts that are used in real fishing situations, with progressive levels of skill.
