In 1860 a group of fly fishermen from the New York State Sportsmen's Club held the first contest in "fly throwing".  That contest was won by a George Lennebacker, one of the five participants.  His best cast that day was 65 feet. This little contest was the beginning of the sport of tournament casting.

For an introduction to the subject of accuracy casting, including some history of the Golden Gate club and the role it has played in the sport of both fly fishing and tournament casting, meet with Alice at the benches near the target rings (on the middle pond) on June 13 at 12:30 pm.

Bring your rod and you will learn the symbolic meaning of these rings and how to use them.

Skill at casting is most important to your success at fishing since the objective is to present the fly, lure, or bait to an intended spot. A good way (and the perfect place!) to learn to be a better caster and therefore to improve your fishing skill is through participation in the club's friendly casting games. In this way you can also develop skills that might soon allow you to participate in tournaments held with other Bay Area clubs.
